RUSTY METALWARE SUCH AS LOCKS, HANDLES AND HINGES FROM CABINETS, TRUNKS AND CASES CAN BE GIVEN A NEW LEASE OF LIFE WITH RUST-OLEUM RUST REFORMER AND RUST-OLEUM UNIVERSAL SPRAY PAINT IN YOUR PREFERRED FINISH.

This combination will also protect metalware from future bouts of rust saving you the worry of it happening all over again.

Fancy giving it a go? Take a look at our easy step-by-step guide below –

What you will need

Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer

Newspaper / dust sheets

Masking tape or painter’s tape

Rust-Oleum Universal Spray Paint

A cloth

STEP 1.

If you can, remove the metalware from the object usually held in place with screws or bolts (in trunks and cases you may need to lift the inner lining for access). If you cannot remove the parts easily without causing damage, leave these in place and carefully mask around them to protect the rest of the object from spray mist.

STEP 2.

In a well-ventilated room, lay the metalware onto newspaper or dust sheets. Ensure it is clean, dry and free from loose paint, rust, wax, oil or grease. Following the instructions on the can, give the parts one light coat with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer.

STEP 3.

When this is dry, give your metalware a coat of Rust-Oleum Universal Spray Paint in your preferred colour and finish – again following the instructions on the can.

Top Tip: Rust-Oleum Universal in Oil Rubbed Bronze gives a great vintage effect and compliments retro suitcases perfectly!

STEP 4.

When metal ware is dry, reattach the parts, or carefully remove masking tape from the rest of the case.

BONUS TIP.

If you make a mistake or have dripping or bubbling, don’t panic; you can correct just about any error with sandpaper.

Simply wait until the paint is dry (allow around 60 minutes) and sand these back, then reapply the top coat.
