Owatrol Deks Olje D1, Wood Oil Clear Matt

Product Description

DEKS OLJE® D.1 is an oil, which saturates the wood, literally feeding it with oil to replace those lost. Driving out moisture and air, filling the woods pores with oil, it enriches and stabilises to provide long lasting protection to interior and exterior timber. A non-film forming, clear oil DEKS OLJE® D.1 enhances the natural beauty of the wood while being easy to maintain, requiring no sanding or stripping.

Properties

Surface Preparation

General directions

• Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, grime, mildew and previous coatings.
• Treat mildew with a 50/50 bleach/water solution. Scrub solution on to surface and allow to stand for 10-15 minutes; rinse thoroughly.
• After stripping and cleaning, allow wood to dry 2-3 good drying days or until it has reached a moisture content of 18% or less before applying finish.
• DEKS OLJE® D.1 may only be applied to bare wood surfaces or a wood surface that was previously finished with DEKS OLJE® D.1. ALL other finishes must be completely and thoroughly removed.
• If necessary sand surface after cleaning and/or stripping (80 or 100 grit paper).

New wood

• Interior – Sand wood with 100 grit paper to open the pores, dust off and wipe with a cloth soaked in Methylated Spirits to degrease the surface and remove any remaining sanding residue.
• Exterior – New smooth, planed wood has a hard shiny surface called mill-glaze that prevents maximum penetration and adhesion of any finish, this should be removed to ensure maximum performance of the finish.
• Treat with AQUANETT®* or PREPDECK®* and neutralise with NET-TROL®* OR sand with 80 grit paper to open the wood pores, dust off and wipe with a cloth soaked in
• Methylated Spirits to degrease the surface and remove any remaining sanding residue.

Weathered wood surfaces (untreated)

• Wood that has weathered longer than 12 months should be cleaned with NET-TROL®* to remove all loose wood fibres, dirt and other surface contamination.
• If wood is severely contaminated, clean with AQUANETT®* or PREPDECK®*and neutralise with NET-TROL®*.

Previously coated surfaces (oiled, paint, stain, varnish…)

• All previous coatings must be completely and thoroughly removed.
• Oils and sealers: Strip with AQUANETT®* or PREPDECK®*, neutralise with NET-TROL®*.
• Solvent (oil or alkyd based finishes): Strip with DILUNETT®* neutralise with NET-TROL®*.
• Acrylic (Water-based) finishes: Strip with PREPDECK®* neutralise with NET-TROL®*.
• Other finishes e.g. 2 pack epoxies, urethanes… Strip with DSP 800*, neutralise by mechanically sanding or rinse surface with a suitable solvent – Warm Water, Acetone, White Spirits…

Note: Hardwoods and woods rich in tannins e.g. Oak, Chestnut, Teak, Ipe, Cedar… may darken with AQUANETT®*, PREPDECK®* and DILUNETT®*, neutralising with NET-TROL®* immediately after rinsing will lighten and restore the woods colour.

Application

• DO NOT THIN. USE AS IS. The secret of DEKS OLJE® D.1’s success lies in its saturation of the wood to bring about an even ”matt sheen” finish when dry.
• Start by applying DEKS OLJE® D.1 to an area that can be treated in about 15 minutes.
• As soon as the 1st application has penetrated (normally 15-30 minutes), apply a 2nd application.
• Continue applying DEKS OLJE® D.1 “wet on wet” until a uniform, overall saturation of the wood is achieved. The number of applications needed depends on the wood.
• DO NOT allow DEKS OLJE® D.1 to become dry or touch dry between applications.
• Leave final application 30 minutes, then wipe over the surface to remove excess and puddled material with a rag soaked in DEKS OLJE® D.1 and rung out so that it is damp to the touch. If necessary occasionally ring out the cloth to keep it damp.
• It is important that as much DEKS OLJE® D.1 as possible is applied on the first day.
• DEKS OLJE® D.1 must be kept “active”, this is done by the “wet on wet” applications and the continual brushing over of the area, which assists and helps achieve maximum penetration.
• DEKS OLJE® D.1 has high penetration; its place is in the wood and not as a surface coating.
• Allow 3 days for DEKS OLJE® D.1 to set-up and dry, before putting the boat in service or continuing with DEKS OLJE® D.2*.
• Temperature is of very little importance when applying DEKS OLJE® D.1.

Restrictions

• DEKS OLJE® D.1 may soften some caulking. If in doubt consult us.
• The tannins and natural oils in woods such as Iroko impede the penetration and drying of finishes. These species of wood should be thoroughly prepared or allowed to weather for 12 months before applying DEKS OLJE® D.1. Contact us for preparation advice.
• Plywood – Contact us.
• Do not use DEKS OLJE® D.1 on Thermo treated wood.
