Product Description

RA.85 is a highly flexible, anti corrosive coating that possesses the deep penetrating and adhesion properties of OWATROL OIL*. RA.85 will restore rusted and corroded surfaces to an acceptable appearance to give lasting protection and greatly prolong the life of the treated surface. RA.85 has excellent abrasion resistance, withstands chemical attack and is ideal in aggressive climatic conditions where a high resistant finish is necessary. Originally developed for the shipping industry RA.85 became a favourite cargo hold coating; carrying approval for the carriage of grain.

Properties

• Sand or shot-blasted surfaces do not require an immediate application – light rust coating will

• Use on all ferrous and non-ferrous metals – Aluminium, Copper, Steel, Iron…
• Galvanised surfaces do not require weathering or pickling prior to application.
• High gloss finish.
• Highly elastic – Will not crack, peel or blister.

Surface Preparation

• Remove all scale; loose and flaking rust and old paint back to a sound surface and edge.
• Feather in any sharp edges.
• Surfaces exposed to chemicals (acids, alkalis or salt deposits) should be washed using copious amounts of water or steam cleaned.
• Severely contaminated surfaces should be cleaned using an appropriate solvent.
• Abrade new wood surfaces with 120 grit paper to open the woods pores and dust off. Wash with denatured alcohol (methylated spirits) to remove any sanding residue.
• Oily, resinous and greasy woods should be thoroughly degreased with denatured alcohol (methylated spirits), acetone or similar solvent based product NOT White Spirit.

METAL SURFACES

New surfaces exc’ aluminium surfaces:

• Prime new metal and galvanised surfaces with 1 coat of OWATROL® OIL* or AP.60* and allow to dry 24 hours.
• Apply 1 or 2 coats of RA.85.
• For new metal surfaces subject to aggressive climatic conditions apply 2 coats.

New aluminium surfaces:

• Apply 2 coats of RA.85 allowing drying time between coats.

Clean, lightly rusted or new unpainted rusty steel:

• Apply 2 coats of RA.85 allowing drying time between coats.

Old severely rusted surfaces:

• Apply wet on wet applications of OWATROL® OIL* until rust is fully saturated and allow to dry.
• Saturation is indicated by a uniform glossy appearance to the surface when OWATROL® OIL* is dry.
• Apply 2 coats of RA.85 allowing drying time between coats.

Previously coated surfaces:

• Spot prime all exposed metal with OWATROL® OIL* or AP.60 depending on severity of rust and allow to dry.
• Apply RA.85 to primed areas to bring level with existing finish, allowing drying time between coats.
• Apply 2 coats of OWATROL® RA.85 over entire area; allowing drying time between coats.

WOODEN SURFACES

New surfaces:

• Apply 2 coats of RA.85 ; allowing drying time between coats.

Damaged, soft, punky or porous wood surfaces:

• Prime with OWATROL® OIL* and allow to dry.
• Apply 2 coats of RA.85 ; allowing drying time between coats.

Previously coated surfaces:

• Spot prime all exposed surfaces with OWATROL® OIL* or AP.60* depending on condition and porosity of the wood, allow to dry.
• Apply RA.85 to primed areas to bring level with existing finish, allowing drying time between coats.
• Apply 2 coats of RA.85 over entire area; allowing drying time between coats.

Restrictions

Do not apply RA.85 direct to new metal (except aluminium), alloys inc’ steel and galvanised surfaces as galvanic corrosion caused through contact with moisture and air can occur. Prime with 1 coat of Owatrol Oil or AP60 first and then allow to dry for 24 hours.
