Surface Preparation
General Directions
- Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dirt, grease, grime, mildew and if necessary previous coatings.
- Treat any mould and mildew with a 50/50 Bleach/Water solution. Scrub solution on to the surface and allow to stand 15 minutes, rinse thoroughly.
- After cleaning and/or stripping allow wood to dry 2-3 good drying days or until it has reached a moisture content of 18% or less.
- If necessary sand surface with 80 grit abrasive or coarser (depending on wood species) to remove any raised grain.
New Wood
- New wood has a hard shiny surface known as mill glaze that prevents maximum penetration; this along with the moisture content and natural oils/resins in new wood prevents the proper adhesion of any coating.
- Conduct water drop test: Sprinkle water on the surface. If water is absorbed immediately, the surface is ready for finishing, if not proceed as follows:-
- Resinous and high moisture content timber e.g. Larch, Pine, Spruce, PTW… – Treat with SEASONITE* and allow to weather a minimum of 6 months.
- Cedar – Treat with SEASONITE* and allow to weather a minimum of 12 months, irrespective of the result of the water drop test.
- Exotic woods e.g. Iroko, Azobe, Padouk, Ipe… – Allow to weather a minimum of 12 months.
Untreated Weathered wood
- Clean wood with NET-TROL* to remove all loose wood fibres, dirt and other surface contamination. If wood is severely contaminated clean with AQUANETT* or PREPDECK*. Neutralise with NET-TROL*.
Previously Coated surfaces (Oil, Paint, Stain etc.)
- Check existing finish for adhesion by using the cross hatch test method.
If existing finish is well adhered
- Sand surface.
- Clean with NET-TROL*.
If existing finish is in poor condition and/or poorly adhered
- All previous coating(s) must be completely and thoroughly removed.
- Oils: Strip with AQUANETT* or PREPDECK*, neutralise with NET-TROL*.
- Solvent (oil or alkyd based) finishes: Strip with DILUNETT*, neutralise with NET-TROL*.
- Acrylic (water-based) finishes: Strip with PREPDECK*, neutralise with NET-TROL*.Other finishes e.g. 2 pack epoxies, urethanes etc.: Strip with DSP800*.
Note: Woods high in tannins e.g. Cedar, Ipe, Oak, Teak will darken when treated with AQUANETT*, PREPDECK* or DILUNETT*. Neutralising with NET-TROL* immediately after rinsing will lighten and restore the woods colour.Note: It is imperative that a contact time test is done when using AQUANETT*, PREPDECK*or DILUNETT* on Oak, Chestnut and other high tannin content woods to avoid blackening the wood – Refer to the relevant TDS.
Application
- Apply a coat of SOLID COLOR STAIN avoiding heavy application.
- Allow to dry – 4 hours.

- When applying by spray, always back-brush or back-roll immediately after application to ensure uniformity of colour, coverage and penetration.
